Comforter Sizes: Dimensions for Every Bed in Inches and Centimeters
Typical comforter and duvet dimensions for each bed, how much they hang over the sides, when to size up, and how US comforters compare with UK, European and Australian duvets.
A queen comforter is typically 90 × 92 in (229 × 234 cm), a king comforter about 106 × 92 in (269 × 234 cm), a full about 81 × 88 in (206 × 224 cm) and a twin about 68 × 88 in (173 × 224 cm). Sizes vary by 2 to 6 in between brands, so check the label against your mattress depth.

Comforter size chart
Unlike mattresses and fitted sheets, comforters have no fixed dimensions. Each brand chooses its own, so the same "queen" can be 86 or 96 in wide. The typical column below is the size you will see most often; the range shows how far brands stray.
| Bed | Typical (in) | Typical (cm) | Common range (in) | Mattress (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 68 × 88 | 173 × 224 | 64–68 × 86–90 | 38 × 75 |
| Twin XL | 68 × 92 | 173 × 234 | 66–68 × 90–94 | 38 × 80 |
| Full | 81 × 88 | 206 × 224 | 78–86 × 86–90 | 54 × 75 |
| Full/queen | 90 × 90 | 229 × 229 | 86–92 × 88–92 | Fits both |
| Queen | 90 × 92 | 229 × 234 | 86–92 × 88–96 | 60 × 80 |
| King | 106 × 92 | 269 × 234 | 102–108 × 88–96 | 76 × 80 |
| California king | 106 × 96 | 269 × 244 | 102–108 × 94–100 | 72 × 84 |
Full/queen and king/California king combination sizes are common because one comforter can then cover two mattress sizes. The trade-off is less overhang on the larger bed.
How much a comforter hangs over the bed
The number that decides whether a comforter looks right is the side drop: comforter width minus mattress width, divided by two. That drop has to cover the mattress side, and ideally a few inches more.
| Bed | Drop each side | Overhang at foot | Covers a mattress up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 15 in (38 cm) | 13 in (33 cm) | 12–13 in thick |
| Twin XL | 15 in (38 cm) | 12 in (30 cm) | 12–13 in thick |
| Full | 13.5 in (34 cm) | 13 in (33 cm) | 11–12 in thick |
| Queen | 15 in (38 cm) | 12 in (30 cm) | 12–13 in thick |
| King | 15 in (38 cm) | 12 in (30 cm) | 12–13 in thick |
| California king | 17 in (43 cm) | 12 in (30 cm) | 14–15 in thick |
The foot overhang assumes the comforter's top edge lines up with the head of the mattress. Folding it back under the pillows, as many people do, cuts the foot overhang by 10 in or more.
Most standard comforters cover a mattress of about 12 in and stop near its bottom edge. That works on a platform bed. On a frame with a box spring, the box spring shows below the comforter, which is what a bed skirt is for.
When to buy an oversized comforter or size up
Mattresses have grown thicker faster than comforter sizes. Work out the width you need with this formula:
Comforter width = mattress width + 2 × (mattress depth + 2 to 3 in)
- Queen, 14-in mattress: 60 + 2 × 16 = 92 in. A standard 90-in queen comforter is just short; a 92 to 96-in one is right.
- Queen, 16-in pillow top: 60 + 2 × 18 = 96 in. Buy an oversized queen (about 96 to 100 in wide) or a king.
- King, 14-in hybrid: 76 + 2 × 16 = 108 in. Look at the top of the king range, or an oversized king.
- Covering the box spring too: a 12-in queen on a 9-in box spring needs 60 + 2 × 23 = 106 in, which is a king comforter.
Oversized comforters typically run about 96 to 100 in wide for a queen and 112 to 120 in for a king, with lengths of 96 to 100 in. Mattress thickness by type is listed in the mattress depth guide.
A 120-in oversized king hangs 22 in over each side of a king mattress. On a low platform bed where the mattress top is only 18 in off the floor, the extra piles up on the floor. Measure from the top of the mattress to the floor: that is the most drop that will look neat.
Duvets and duvet covers
A duvet (also called a duvet insert) is a plain filled quilt designed to live inside a removable cover. The insert comes in the same named sizes as comforters, and the cover is sized to the insert.
| Size | Duvet cover (in) | Duvet cover (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Twin / twin XL | 68 × 90 | 173 × 229 |
| Full / queen | 90 × 92 | 229 × 234 |
| King / Cal king | 106 × 92 | 269 × 234 |
- Match the insert to the cover: an insert the same size as the cover, or up to 2 in larger, fills the corners. A smaller insert slides around inside.
- A comforter can go in a duvet cover if the dimensions match. Check the comforter's real size first, since a 90 × 92 in comforter in a 104-in cover will shift.
- Corner ties or tabs hold the insert in place. If an insert lacks loops, a cover with interior ties will not help.
Comforter sizes in cm and international duvet sizes
The UK, Europe and Australia sell duvets in fixed metric sizes, and the names do not match the US ones. A UK king duvet is about as wide as a US queen comforter, and a European double is often two single duvets on one bed.
| Region and size | Centimeters | Inches | For mattress |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK single | 135 × 200 | 53.1 × 78.7 | 90 × 190 cm |
| UK double | 200 × 200 | 78.7 × 78.7 | 135 × 190 cm |
| UK king | 225–230 × 220 | 88.6–90.6 × 86.6 | 150 × 200 cm |
| UK super king | 260 × 220 | 102.4 × 86.6 | 180 × 200 cm |
| EU single | 135–140 × 200 | 53.1–55.1 × 78.7 | 90 × 200 cm |
| EU single, long | 155 × 220 | 61.0 × 86.6 | 90–100 × 200 cm |
| EU double | 200 × 200 or 200 × 220 | 78.7 × 78.7 or 86.6 | 140–160 × 200 cm |
| EU large double | 240 × 220 | 94.5 × 86.6 | 160–180 × 200 cm |
| Australia single | 140 × 210 | 55.1 × 82.7 | 92 × 187 cm |
| Australia double | 180 × 210 | 70.9 × 82.7 | 138 × 187 cm |
| Australia queen | 210 × 210 | 82.7 × 82.7 | 153 × 203 cm |
| Australia king | 245 × 210 | 96.5 × 82.7 | 183 × 203 cm |
A US queen comforter (229 × 234 cm) suits a 160 × 200 cm European bed: it gives about 35 cm of drop each side. A UK small double bed (120 × 190 cm) has no separate duvet size at most brands; a 200 × 200 cm double duvet fits it with generous drop. Metric mattress sizes are listed in the mattress size chart.
How to measure for a comforter
- Measure the mattress width and length. Use the real numbers, not the size name, especially for older or imported beds.
- Measure the depth you want covered. From the mattress top to the bottom of the mattress, to the bottom of the box spring, or to just above the floor.
- Add it twice to the width. Mattress width + 2 × the drop gives the comforter width.
- Add it once to the length, plus about 10 in if you tuck the top under the pillows.
- Compare with the product's listed size, not its name. Buy the nearest size at or above your result.
Comforter sets, shams and washing
- What comes in a set: a twin comforter set normally includes one sham; full and larger sets include two. Queen sets use standard shams (20 × 26 in) and king sets use king shams (20 × 36 in). See the pillow size guide for sham and Euro sizes.
- Sheets underneath are sized to the mattress, not the comforter; see the bed sheet size chart.
- Washing a queen or king comforter needs drum space for the filling to move. A home front-loader of about 4.5 cu ft (127 L) or more usually manages it; smaller machines leave patches unwashed. Drum capacities are compared in the washing machine size guide.
Lighter layers such as quilts, coverlets, bedspreads and throws are covered on the blanket size chart.
Frequently asked questions
What size comforter is 167 × 236 cm?
167 × 236 cm is 65.7 × 92.9 in, which is a twin XL comforter (typically 66 to 68 × 90 to 92 in). It also fits a regular twin with about 4 in of extra length at the foot.
What is a double comforter size in cm?
A US full (double) comforter is usually about 206 × 224 cm (81 × 88 in), and full/queen combination comforters about 229 × 229 cm (90 × 90 in). In the UK, a double duvet is 200 × 200 cm.
What is a king size comforter in meters?
A US king comforter is typically about 2.69 × 2.34 m (106 × 92 in), with a range of roughly 2.64 to 2.74 m wide. A California king comforter is about 2.69 × 2.44 m (106 × 96 in).
Can I use a king comforter on a queen bed?
Yes. A 106-in king comforter on a 60-in queen hangs about 23 in over each side instead of 15 in. That covers a deep pillow-top or a box spring, but on a low platform bed it can drag on the floor.
Is a full/queen comforter big enough for a queen?
Usually it is a little small. A typical full/queen comforter is about 90 × 90 in, which gives a queen 15 in of side drop and 10 in at the foot. That works on a 10 to 12-in mattress but leaves the sides of a 14-in or deeper mattress partly exposed.
Are comforter and duvet sizes the same?
The nominal sizes are close, but a duvet is an insert that goes inside a cover. Buy the cover in the same named size as the insert, or an insert up to 2 in larger than the cover so it fills the corners.
