Engagement Ring Sizes: Finger Size, Diamond Size in mm and Band Width
For anyone buying an engagement ring: how to get the finger size right (including without asking), how big a given carat weight actually looks, and how the band and setting change the fit.
Engagement rings use the standard ring size scale: US size 6 is 16.5 mm inside diameter and size 7 is 17.3 mm. A 1-carat round diamond measures about 6.4 mm (0.25 in) across, 0.5 carat about 5.1 mm and 2 carats about 8.1 mm. Typical engagement ring bands are 1.5 to 2.5 mm wide.

Engagement ring finger sizes
An engagement ring is sized like any other ring: by inside diameter on the US scale, by circumference in mm in Europe, and by letter in the UK. The sizes most often ordered are shown below; the full ring size chart has every size from 3 to 13 with UK, EU and Japanese equivalents.
| US size | Inside diameter | Circumference | UK | EU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4½ | 15.3 mm (0.60 in) | 48.0 mm | I½ | 48 |
| 5 | 15.7 mm (0.62 in) | 49.3 mm | J½ | 49 |
| 5½ | 16.1 mm (0.63 in) | 50.6 mm | K½ | 51 |
| 6 | 16.5 mm (0.65 in) | 51.9 mm | L½ | 52 |
| 6½ | 16.9 mm (0.67 in) | 53.1 mm | M½ | 53 |
| 7 | 17.3 mm (0.68 in) | 54.4 mm | N½ | 54 |
| 7½ | 17.7 mm (0.70 in) | 55.7 mm | O½ | 56 |
| 8 | 18.1 mm (0.71 in) | 57.0 mm | P½ | 57 |
The ring goes on the fourth finger of the left hand in the US, UK and most of Western Europe. In several countries, including Germany, Norway, Poland, Russia and India, the wedding ring (and sometimes the engagement ring) goes on the right hand. On a right-handed person the right ring finger is often about half a size larger than the left, so measure the hand the ring will actually go on.
How to find a ring size secretly
If the proposal is a surprise, these methods are listed from most to least accurate.
- Borrow a ring she already wears on that finger. Measure the inside diameter across the widest point with a millimeter ruler, or trace the inside edge on paper and measure the circle. A ring worn on the right ring finger may run about half a size large for the left.
- Press a borrowed ring into soap or modeling clay to make an impression, or slide it down your own finger and mark where it stops with a pen. A jeweler can read either.
- Ask a close friend or family member, who may know or can find out under a pretext such as a shared ring-sizing visit.
- Estimate from build. If nothing else works, US 6 to 6½ is a common middle choice. Ordering slightly large is safer: a ring that is too big can be worn on a different finger until it is resized, while a ring that is too small cannot be worn at all.
If you are guessing the size, choose a design with a plain metal shank and confirm in writing that the jeweler resizes it. Full eternity bands and rings with pavé stones all the way around are poor choices for a guessed size.
Diamond carat weight to size in mm
Carat is a weight (1 ct = 0.2 g), not a size. The diameter below assumes a well-proportioned round brilliant, with depth about 61 to 62% of the diameter. A stone cut deep will weigh more and look smaller from the top; a shallow one will look larger but lose brightness.
| Carat | Diameter (mm) | Diameter (in) | Size on a US 6 finger |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 ct | 4.1 | 0.16 | 25% of finger width |
| 0.33 ct | 4.4 | 0.17 | 27% |
| 0.50 ct | 5.1 | 0.20 | 31% |
| 0.75 ct | 5.8 | 0.23 | 35% |
| 1.00 ct | 6.4 | 0.25 | 39% |
| 1.25 ct | 6.9 | 0.27 | 42% |
| 1.50 ct | 7.4 | 0.29 | 45% |
| 2.00 ct | 8.1 | 0.32 | 49% |
| 2.50 ct | 8.7 | 0.34 | 53% |
| 3.00 ct | 9.3 | 0.37 | 56% |
| 4.00 ct | 10.2 | 0.40 | 62% |
| 5.00 ct | 11.0 | 0.43 | 67% |
The finger-width column compares the stone with a 16.5 mm US size 6 finger. Because weight rises with the cube of the diameter, doubling the carat weight adds only about 26% to the width: a 2 ct stone is 8.1 mm, not 12.8 mm. On a size 4 finger the same stone covers more of the finger and looks larger; on a size 8 finger it looks smaller.
Carat to mm for oval, princess and other shapes
Elongated shapes spread the same weight over a larger face, so a 1 ct oval or marquise looks bigger from above than a 1 ct round. These are typical dimensions for stones cut to common proportions; individual stones vary by several tenths of a millimeter.
| Shape | 1 ct (mm) | 2 ct (mm) | Typical length-to-width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | 6.4 | 8.1 | 1.00 |
| Oval | 7.7 × 5.7 | 9.7 × 7.2 | 1.30 to 1.50 |
| Princess | 5.5 × 5.5 | 6.9 × 6.9 | 1.00 to 1.05 |
| Cushion | 5.5 × 5.5 | 6.9 × 6.9 | 1.00 to 1.20 |
| Emerald | 7.0 × 5.0 | 8.8 × 6.3 | 1.30 to 1.50 |
| Pear | 8.5 × 5.5 | 10.7 × 6.9 | 1.45 to 1.75 |
| Marquise | 10.0 × 5.0 | 12.6 × 6.3 | 1.85 to 2.10 |
The 2 ct column scales the 1 ct dimensions by the cube root of 2 (1.26), which holds when proportions stay the same. Lab-grown and natural diamonds of the same shape and weight have the same size, because both have the same density (3.52 g/cm³).
A halo of small diamonds around the center stone typically adds about 2 to 3 mm to the face. A 1 ct round in a halo setting reads at roughly 9 mm across, close to the width of a 3 ct stone.
Engagement ring band width and setting height
The band (shank) affects comfort, strength, how big the center stone looks and whether a wedding band sits beside it.
| Band width | Look | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.3 to 1.6 mm | Very fine; makes the stone look larger | Bends and wears thin more easily, especially under a heavy stone; harder to resize |
| 1.8 to 2.2 mm | The common solitaire width | Good balance of durability and delicacy |
| 2.5 to 3 mm | Substantial | Suits larger stones (2 ct and up) and active hands |
| 3 mm and wider | Bold, often with pavé or engraving | Feels tighter; consider +¼ size |
The thickness of the band from inside to outside, usually 1.3 to 2 mm, matters as much as its width for durability. A ring that is both narrow and thin will go out of round over the years.
Setting height is the distance from the finger to the top of the stone. High-set solitaires show more of the stone from the side but catch on gloves, hair and knitwear. Low or bezel settings sit closer to the finger and suit people who work with their hands.
Fitting the engagement ring with a wedding band
- Match the widths within about half a millimeter so the two rings look like a set. A 2 mm engagement band usually pairs with a 2 to 2.5 mm wedding band.
- Check for a gap. A low-set center stone, a halo or a cathedral setting can stop a straight band from sitting flush. A contoured or notched band closes the gap; otherwise expect a small space between them.
- Size them together. Two 2 mm rings stacked act like a 4 mm band and rarely need a size change. Combined widths above about 6 mm may need a quarter size up on the band.
- Mind the metals. Platinum and 14k gold worn together will wear against each other; harder metal tends to wear the softer one over time.
Widths, profiles and weights for the band itself are in the wedding band guide. Matching studs are sized by the same carat-to-mm rule, covered in the earring size guide, and the same logic applies to diamond pendants.
Common engagement ring sizing mistakes
- Comparing carat weights between shapes. A 1 ct marquise is 10 mm long, nearly twice the face length of a 1 ct princess.
- Choosing a size for a cold finger. Fingers swell in heat and during pregnancy. A ring sized on a cold day can be hard to remove in summer.
- Ignoring the knuckle. If the knuckle is large, a ring sized for it will spin at the base. Sizing beads or a slightly squared inner shank keep the stone on top.
- Forgetting storage. Diamonds scratch other jewelry and each other. Keep the ring in its own slot in a jewelry box or ring dish.
Frequently asked questions
Should an engagement ring be tight or loose?
Snug. It should need a little push and a twist to pass the knuckle and should not spin freely at the base of the finger. A top-heavy solitaire that rotates is a sign the ring is about a half size too big.
How many mm is a 1.5 carat diamond?
A well-cut 1.5-carat round brilliant is about 7.4 mm across (0.29 in). Fancy shapes of the same weight are typically around 8.8 × 6.5 mm for an oval and 6.3 mm square for a princess cut.
Do engagement ring and wedding band need to be the same size?
Usually yes. Rings worn on the same finger should share a size. Some people with wide combined widths (over about 6 mm together) order the wedding band a quarter size larger so the pair passes the knuckle comfortably.
What if the engagement ring is the wrong size?
Most solitaire and side-stone rings with a plain shank can be resized by about two sizes. Ask the seller before buying: many jewelers resize the first time at no charge, but rings with stones set all the way around may need to be remade.
Is a couple's engagement ring sized differently for men?
No. Men's and women's rings use the same size scale. A man's engagement ring or band is simply usually a larger size (US 8 to 13) and wider (4 to 8 mm), and wide bands often need a quarter to half size extra.
