Slipper Size Chart: Letter Sizes, Paired Sizes and How Slippers Should Fit
Slippers are sold in loose ranges because their soft uppers and padding adapt to the foot. The catch is that the padding also compresses, so the right size depends on what the slipper is made of as much as on your shoe size.
Most slipper brands size women's S = US 5-6, M = 7-8, L = 9-10, XL = 11-12 and men's S = 7-8, M = 9-10, L = 11-12, XL = 13-14. In EU sizes, an M is about 38-39.5 for women and 42-43 for men. Choose the snugger size for sheepskin and memory foam, which pack down with wear.

Adult slipper size chart
Letter sizes vary between brands by up to one shoe size, but most follow the ranges below. Each letter covers two full shoe sizes, about 1.7 cm (⅔ in) of foot length.

| Men's XL | - | 13-14 | 12-13 | 47-48.5 | 29.6-30.5 cm (11.7-12.0 in) |

UK and EU columns use the same conversions as the shoe size chart (US women's = UK + 2, US men's = UK + 1). Some UK brands use their own letters: women's M as UK 5-6 and L as UK 7-8 are common, but a few shift by one size.
European paired slipper sizes
European slipper makers often label each slipper with two EU sizes. Two pairing patterns exist, even-odd (38/39) and odd-even (37/38), so a 38 can fall in either.
| EU pair | UK | US women's | US men's |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36/37 | 3.5-4 | 5.5-6 | 4.5-5 |
| 38/39 | 5-6 | 7-8 | 6-7 |
| 40/41 | 6.5-7.5 | 8.5-9.5 | 7.5-8.5 |
| 42/43 | 8-9 | 10-11 | 9-10 |
| 44/45 | 9.5-10.5 | 11.5-12.5 | 10.5-11.5 |
| 46/47 | 11-12 | 13-14 | 12-13 |
Kids' slipper sizes
Children's slippers are usually sold in paired US sizes. Foot lengths below are the lower and upper size of each pair; see the kids' shoe size chart for every size and age.
| US pair | Often labeled | UK | EU | Foot length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-6 | Toddler S | 4-5 | 20.5-21.5 | 11.9-12.7 cm |
| 7-8 | Toddler M | 6-7 | 23-24 | 13.5-14.4 cm |
| 9-10 | Toddler L | 8-9 | 25.5-26.5 | 15.2-16.1 cm |
| 11-12 | Little kid S/M | 10-11 | 28-29 | 16.9-17.8 cm |
| 13-1Y | Little kid L | 12-13 | 30.5-32 | 18.6-19.5 cm |
| 2Y-3Y | Big kid S | 1-2 | 33-34.5 | 20.3-21.2 cm |
| 4Y-5Y | Big kid M | 3-4 | 35.5-37 | 22.0-22.9 cm |
| 6Y-7Y | Big kid L | 5-6 | 38-39.5 | 23.7-24.6 cm |
Choose slippers with a non-slip rubber or suede sole and a closed heel for children who run around the house. Bootie styles stay on better than open-back scuffs for toddlers.
Sizing by slipper type
| Type | Fit when new | Between sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Sheepskin or shearling lined | Snug; toes may lightly touch the end | Size down |
| Memory foam footbed | Snug; foam compresses in the first weeks | Size down |
| Fleece or knit bootie | Close fit, stretches a little | Size down if the knit is stretchy |
| Leather moccasin | Snug at the sides, toe room like a shoe | Size up if soft sole, down if unlined suede |
| Open-back scuff / slide | Heel fully on the sole | Size up |
| Clog or firm-soled house shoe | Like a shoe, with about 1 cm at the toe | Size up |
Sheepskin pile and memory foam flatten under body weight, so the inside of the slipper gets longer and roomier over the first few weeks of wear. A slipper that feels perfect in the shop can be loose a month later. Buy padded slippers on the snug side.
How to check slipper fit
- Wear what you wear at home. If you wear socks indoors, try slippers with socks; thick house or bed socks can take up half a size.
- Walk on a hard floor. The heel should stay in a closed-back slipper and should not slap the floor in a scuff.
- Check the toes while standing. In firm-soled slippers, aim for about 1 cm (⅜ in) of room. In padded slippers, a lighter touch at the end is acceptable.
- Check the sides. A fleece or knit upper should not bulge over the sole; if it does, the slipper is too narrow even if the length is right.
Slippers for swollen feet or wide feet
Feet that swell during the day, or after injury or surgery, need adjustable slippers rather than a larger size. Look for hook-and-loop closures over the instep, wide (often E or 2E/EE) fittings, and a firm sole with a back. Going up two sizes for width makes the slipper long enough to trip on. Wide-fit slippers use the same width letters as shoes: D is standard for men and B for women, so a women's D or men's 2E is a wide fit.
For a matching layer for cold floors, the robe size guide covers bathrobe lengths, and flip-flops use similar letter ranges for summer.
Frequently asked questions
Should slippers be tight or loose?
Snug but not tight when new. Closed-back slippers should hold the heel without pressure on the toes. Sheepskin-lined and memory-foam slippers can feel close to tight at first because the lining compresses within a few weeks.
Should I size up or down in slippers if I'm a half size?
For sheepskin, shearling and thick memory foam, round down: the padding compresses and the slipper grows. For thin-soled moccasins, scuffs and slippers with a firm sole, round up so your toes do not reach the end.
What size slipper is a women's 8.5?
A US women's 8.5 sits between M (7-8) and L (9-10). Take M in fleece-lined or sheepskin slippers that will pack down, and L in open-back scuffs or firm-soled styles.
Do men's and women's slippers use the same sizes?
The letters do not match. A men's S (US 7-8) is about the same length as a women's L (US 9-10 is roughly men's 7.5-8.5). Unisex slippers usually give both scales or EU numbers.
What do EU slipper sizes like 38/39 mean?
Each slipper covers two EU sizes. 38/39 fits EU 38 to 39, which is roughly UK 5-6, US women's 7-8 or US men's 6-7.
