Sports Sizes: Courts, Fields, Goals, Balls and Equipment

Official dimensions for the playing areas, goals and balls of the major sports, plus the space each one needs at home and the sizing rules for skis, boards, boats and bikes.

Quick answer

The most-searched sports dimensions are a 94 × 50 ft (28.65 × 15.24 m) NBA basketball court, a 78 × 36 ft (23.77 × 10.97 m) tennis doubles court, a 24 × 8 ft (7.32 × 2.44 m) soccer goal, a basketball rim 10 ft (3.05 m) high, and a 9-ft pool table with a 100 × 50 in (254 × 127 cm) playing surface.

Sports court and field dimensions

The table gives the regulation playing area for each sport, measured to the boundary lines. Where a sport is defined in meters (FIBA, volleyball, squash) the metric figure is exact and the feet are converted; the reverse applies to US sports.

Two practical points hide behind these numbers. First, most playing areas need clear space outside the lines: about 21 ft behind each tennis baseline at tournament level, 2 m around a FIBA court, and at least 3 m around a volleyball court under FIVB rules. Second, US school and recreation facilities often use smaller sizes than the professional standard, such as the 84-ft high school basketball court.

Diamonds, pitches and lanes measured by distance

Some sports are defined by one critical distance rather than a rectangle. These are the ones people check when marking out a yard or a practice area.

Youth baseball shortens both distances: Little League (ages 12 and under) uses 60 ft bases and a 46 ft pitching distance. Check your league's rules before you mark a backyard diamond.

Goal, hoop and net sizes

Goals and nets are the pieces most often bought for home use, so their exact openings and heights matter. All figures are regulation adult sizes.

Youth soccer and youth basketball scale these down by age: a 6 × 4 ft goal for under-8s and a rim at 8 ft for ages 7 and 8, for example. The soccer goal size guide lists US and English youth goals by age group, and the basketball hoop dimensions guide gives rim heights by age and home backboard sizes.

Sports ball sizes and weights

Balls are specified by circumference or diameter plus a weight range. Circumference is the figure printed on youth balls (for example 27.5 in), so it is given first where the rules use it.

Youth ball sizes

  • Soccer: size 3 (58.5–61 cm around) for roughly under-8s, size 4 (63.5–66 cm) for about ages 8 to 12, size 5 from about 12 or 13. US and English leagues set the exact age cut-offs.
  • Basketball: size 5 (27.5 in) for most players aged about 9 to 11, size 6 (28.5 in) for girls 12 and up and women, size 7 (29.5 in) for boys about 12 and up and men.
  • Tennis: children under 10 use slower red, orange and green balls on shorter courts. Red balls are larger and much lower in pressure than a standard ball.

Space needed for sports at home

For home projects the useful number is the whole footprint: the equipment plus the clear space to play. These are the minimums that make each activity work properly.

The table tennis figure allows 5 ft behind each end of the table and 3 ft at each side. Competition play needs far more: the ITTF minimum playing space is 14 × 7 m (46 × 23 ft). The dartboard footprint covers the throw distance plus room for the thrower to stand behind the line.

Pool tables are the most common indoor project, and the cue, not the table, sets the room size. The pool table dimensions guide has room sizes for every table size with 58, 52 and 48 in cues, plus table heights, pocket sizes and floor loads. For a full home gym rather than a game room, see the home gym space guide, the power rack dimensions and the exercise bike sizes. Backyard play equipment is covered in the trampoline size guide.

Anchor goals and hoops

Movable soccer goals and portable basketball hoops can tip over when someone hangs on the crossbar or rim. Anchor goals with stakes or weights every time they are moved, and keep portable hoop bases filled to the maker's level.

How to size skis, boards, boats and bikes

Personal equipment is sized to the rider, not to a fixed standard. Each sport uses a different body measurement, which is the most common source of buying mistakes.

Sizing rules for personal sports equipment

Snow sports

Ski length depends on height and ability, while snowboard length follows weight first because a board is designed to flex under a given load. Both charts, with boot and pole sizing, are in the ski size chart and the snowboard size chart.

Water sports

Volume is the number that matters for anything you float on. A beginner surfer needs roughly 1 liter of board per kilogram of body weight, an advanced surfer about 0.4. Paddleboards carry far more volume, often 250 L or more, because you stand on them in flat water. Kayaks are rated by a maximum load that should include you and your gear. See the surfboard size chart, the paddleboard size guide and the kayak size guide.

Cycling

Adult bikes are sized by frame, in centimeters for road and gravel bikes and in inches or S to XL letters for mountain and hybrid bikes. Height charts get you to the right size, and inseam settles riders between two sizes; the bike frame size chart covers every adult type with fit adjustments. Children's bikes are sized by wheel diameter, from 12 in to 26 in, and the bicycle size guide covers kids' sizes, wheel standards and the overall dimensions of a bike for storage, racks and car transport.

Gym equipment dimensions

Strength equipment has de facto standards that decide what fits together. An Olympic barbell is 7.2 ft (2.2 m) long and 20 kg (44 lb) for the men's bar, with 50 mm (2 in) sleeves, so any Olympic plate fits any Olympic bar. Plate diameters and thicknesses vary with material; the weight plate size guide and the barbell dimensions guide list them, and the weight bench guide covers bench heights and widths.

The ceiling is the limit most home gyms hit first. A full power rack is usually 80 to 93 in tall, and overhead presses or pull-ups need clearance above your head when standing on the floor or a platform, so measure before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of sports items like balls?

Each governing body sets its own. A size 5 soccer ball is 68-70 cm around, a men's basketball 29.5 in (75 cm), a tennis ball 6.54-6.86 cm across, a baseball 9-9¼ in around, and a golf ball at least 1.680 in (42.67 mm) in diameter. The ball table above lists weights as well.

Is a basketball court bigger than a tennis court?

Inside the lines, yes: an NBA court covers 4,700 sq ft and a tennis doubles court 2,808 sq ft. With recommended run-off, a tennis plot (120 × 60 ft, 7,200 sq ft) is larger than a high school basketball court with 6 ft of clear space all round (96 × 62 ft, 5,952 sq ft).

How many pickleball courts fit on a tennis court?

Two pickleball courts (each 44 × 20 ft) can be painted inside one tennis court's lines, and four fit on a full 120 × 60 ft tennis plot when each gets its own 60 × 30 ft space with run-off.

How big is a table tennis table?

9 × 5 ft (2.74 × 1.525 m), with the playing surface 30 in (76 cm) above the floor and a 6 in (15.25 cm) net. For casual play allow a room of at least 19 × 11 ft so players can step back from each end.

What size is an American football field?

120 × 53⅓ yards (360 × 160 ft, or 109.7 × 48.8 m) including both 10-yard end zones. The field of play between the goal lines is 100 yards. NFL goalposts have a crossbar 10 ft high with uprights 18 ft 6 in apart.
