Wiper Blade Sizes: Size Chart, Vehicle Examples and Connectors

Wiper blades are sold by length in inches, in pairs that differ for the driver and passenger side, plus a separate rear blade on hatchbacks and SUVs. Here are the standard lengths, typical pairings by vehicle type, and how to check what your car takes.

Quick answer

Front wiper blades come in lengths from 12 to 28 in (305-711 mm) in 1-inch steps. Most cars and crossovers use a 24-26 in (610-660 mm) driver blade with a 16-20 in (406-508 mm) passenger blade; many full-size pickups use 22 in (559 mm) on both sides. Rear blades are usually 10-16 in (254-406 mm).

Wiper blade size chart

Blades are labeled in whole inches in North America. Factory blades are often specified in millimeters, so the table shows both, with the metric lengths automakers commonly use.

26 in660 mm650 mmDriver side on most current sedans and crossovers
27-28 in686-711 mm700 mmDriver side on minivans and vehicles with very tall windshields

Because 650 mm is 25.6 in and 450 mm is 17.7 in, a car specified for 650/450 mm blades is sold 26 and 18 in replacements. That rounding is the main reason two catalogs sometimes disagree by an inch.

Wiper blade sizes by vehicle type

Driver blades are longer because they sweep the driver's side of a wider, usually asymmetric pattern. The exceptions are flat or near-upright windshields, which often take two equal blades.

How to find and measure your wiper size

  1. Owner's manual: the maintenance or specifications section lists both front lengths and the rear, often in millimeters.
  2. Old blade packaging or part number: blade makers print the length on the frame or in the part number.
  3. Measure: lift the arm, measure the rubber from tip to tip in a straight line, and round to the nearest inch. Measure driver and passenger blades separately.
  4. Note the connector where the blade meets the arm (see below). Most retail blades come with adapters for the common types.
Protect the windshield

With the blade removed, a spring-loaded wiper arm can snap back and crack the glass. Lay a folded towel on the windshield under the arm while you change blades.

Wiper arm connector types

Common wiper blade attachment types

Rear blades often use different, vehicle-specific fittings, and some rear wipers are a one-piece arm and blade.

Conventional, beam and hybrid blades

  • Conventional (frame) blades: a metal frame with several pressure points. Inexpensive, but the frame can ice up in winter.
  • Beam (bracketless) blades: a curved spring-steel strip spreads pressure evenly along the rubber. Fitted from the factory on most new cars and better at shedding snow.
  • Hybrid blades: a beam-style blade inside an aerodynamic shell, used as original equipment on many Japanese cars.
  • Winter blades: a frame blade wrapped in a rubber boot to keep ice out of the joints.

Length matters regardless of type: always buy the length specified for each side. For the windshield the blades sweep, see the windshield size guide; for other common replacement parts, see the car battery size chart and the tire size chart.

Frequently asked questions

What size wiper blades fit my car?

Check the owner's manual, the part number on your current blades, or a blade maker's lookup by year, make and model. You can also measure the old rubber end to end and round to the nearest inch. Measure both sides, because the passenger blade is usually shorter.

Can I use a longer wiper blade than specified?

One inch longer usually works on the driver side, but check that the blade does not hit the windshield trim, the A-pillar or the other blade at either end of its sweep, and that it clears the cowl when parked. Going 2 in or more longer often causes chatter or contact, and a shorter blade simply clears less glass.

Which is the rear wiper in a set of 28, 20 and 16 inch blades?

In a three-blade set, the shortest is almost always the rear: here the 28 in is the driver's blade, the 20 in the passenger's and the 16 in the rear. Rear blades often have a vehicle-specific connector, so check the fit before installing.

Why do parts stores list different sizes for the same car?

Many factory blades are made in metric lengths that fall between inch sizes. A 450 mm blade is 17.7 in, so one catalog lists 18 in and another 17 in. Either will usually fit; the shorter one is the safer choice where clearance is tight.

What is a 22 inch wiper blade in mm?

22 in is 559 mm. Other common conversions: 16 in = 406 mm, 18 in = 457 mm, 20 in = 508 mm, 24 in = 610 mm, 26 in = 660 mm and 28 in = 711 mm.

How often should wiper blades be replaced?

Blade makers generally recommend every 6-12 months, sooner in hot sunny climates or after a hard winter. Streaks, chatter, skipped patches and cracked or split rubber all mean the edge has worn.
