32-inch monitor dimensions in inches and cm

Monitor brands use the 31.5-inch panel for nearly all of their 32-inch class models. The table gives both, so you can compare against a spec sheet or a 32-inch TV.

European listings give the 31.5-inch size as "80 cm". Either way, the screen is about 2.3 ft wide and 1.3 ft tall.

Overall size with stand

The Dell U3225QE (31.5-inch, 3840 × 2160) is a typical height-adjustable 32-inch monitor:

The panel weighs 14.4 lb (6.52 kg); with the stand, about 20.6 lb (9.3 kg). Note the height: at full extension the top edge is 24.4 in (62 cm) above the desk, so a 32-inch monitor does not fit under a typical overhead shelf or hutch unless the stand is lowered or replaced by an arm.

Why 4K is the usual resolution at 32 inches

A 32-inch 1440p monitor has the same density as a 24-inch 1080p screen: text is large but visibly pixelated at desk distance, and you see no more content than on a 27-inch 1440p monitor. It suits gaming on a mid-range graphics card more than office work.

At 4K, a 32-inch screen at 125% scaling gives a workspace equivalent to 3072 × 1728, a fifth wider and taller than 1440p, with crisp text. At 100% it shows the full 3840 × 2160, which some people use for spreadsheets and timelines at 24 to 28 in from the screen. 6K models such as Dell's U3224KB (6144 × 3456) target Mac users, who run them at exactly 2× for a 3072 × 1728 workspace.

Desk depth and viewing distance for a 32-inch monitor

This is the size where desk depth starts to matter. The screen is 15.4 in tall and 27.5 in wide, so sitting too close forces you to look up, down and sideways to scan it.

• Viewing distance: 28 to 36 in (70 to 90 cm) from your eyes, inside OSHA's 20 to 40 in (50 to 100 cm) range. At 30 in, the screen spans about 49 degrees horizontally, comparable to sitting 26 in from a 27-inch monitor.
• Desk depth: 27.5 in (70 cm) is a practical minimum and 30 in (76 cm) is comfortable. On a 24 in deep desk, mount the monitor on an arm at the back edge or on a wall bracket to gain the 8.5 in the stand would use.
• Height: keep the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. On a 15.4 in tall screen, raising it higher puts the center well above the 15 to 20 degrees below eye level that OSHA suggests, and forces you to tilt your head back. Many people run the stand near its lowest setting.
• Bifocal and progressive lens wearers read through the bottom of the lens, which makes the top of a tall screen harder to see. Set the monitor lower and tilt it back.

32-inch vs 27-inch and 34-inch ultrawide

The 32-inch and the 34-inch ultrawide have almost the same screen area but a different shape. The 32-inch is 2.3 in taller, which helps with documents, code and photos in portrait. The ultrawide is 3.9 in wider at the same height as a 27-inch, which suits side-by-side windows, timelines and games. A 32-inch 4K also has 67% more pixels than a 3440 × 1440 ultrawide. 32-inch monitor vs a 32-inch TV

A 32-inch TV has the same screen size and is often cheaper, but it is a poor desk monitor:

• Resolution: most 32-inch TVs are 1366 × 768 or 1920 × 1080. At 1080p that is 69 PPI, coarser than any common monitor.
• Stand: TVs sit on fixed feet with no height adjustment, so the screen is usually too low or too high for desk use.
• Image processing: TVs add input lag in their default picture modes; a "game" or "PC" mode reduces it.

Mounting a 32-inch monitor

32-inch monitors use VESA 100 × 100 mm with M4 screws. Panel weights of 13 to 16 lb (6 to 7 kg) are within the range of standard single arms (the Ergotron LX, for example, is rated 7 to 25 lb), but check the arm's maximum screen size and its tilt tension: a tall panel puts more leverage on the tilt joint than a 27-inch. An arm or wall mount frees the 8.5 in of desk depth the stand occupies, which is the single most useful upgrade on a shallow desk.
