85-Inch TV Dimensions: How Wide, How Tall and How Heavy
An 85-inch TV is the largest size most homes take without special delivery. Here are its screen measurements, the real dimensions and weights of current models, and the furniture, wall and doorway space you need.
An 85-inch TV has a screen 74.1 in wide and 41.7 in tall (188.2 × 105.8 cm), about 6 ft 2 in across. Current 85-inch models measure 74.4–74.9 in wide and 42.6–43.1 in tall without the stand (189–190 × 108–110 cm) and weigh 72–109 lb (32–49 kg).

85-inch TV dimensions: width, height and diagonal
| Measurement | Inches | Feet | Centimeters | Millimeters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Width | 74.1 in | 6 ft 2 in | 188.2 cm | 1882 mm |
| Height | 41.7 in | 3 ft 6 in | 105.8 cm | 1058 mm |
| Diagonal | 85 in | 7 ft 1 in | 215.9 cm | 2159 mm |
| Area | 3,087 sq in | 21.4 sq ft | 1.99 m² |
The 85 in is measured corner to corner across the picture. On a 16:9 screen the horizontal width is 0.872 times the diagonal and the height 0.490 times. Most brands sell the size as "85-inch class" with an 84.5 in viewable diagonal, which trims the picture to 73.6 × 41.4 in (187.1 × 105.2 cm).

Two weight classes stand out. Samsung's DU7200 and TCL's QM7K weigh about 72 to 75 lb. The premium models from Samsung, Sony and Hisense run 96 to 109 lb, a third or more heavier at the same screen size. That difference decides whether two people can comfortably lift the TV onto a mount, and which mount you can buy.

TV stand size for an 85-inch TV
Most 85-inch sets stand on two feet placed close to the ends of the panel, so the furniture has to be about as wide as the TV itself. A few use a central pedestal and fit on narrower furniture; the spec sheet's "stand width" or foot spacing figure tells you which kind you have.
- Width: 76 in (193 cm) minimum for end-mounted feet; 80 to 96 in (203–244 cm) for a balanced look.
- Depth: 16 in (41 cm) suits most models; Sony's wide-set feet need 19 in (48 cm) or more.
- Height: 17 to 21 in (43–53 cm). The screen is nearly 42 in tall, and a standard 24 to 30 in cabinet pushes its center well above seated eye level.
- Load rating: 120 lb (55 kg) or more, so it covers the heaviest model on its stand with margin.
See the TV stand size guide for console heights by sofa height and for corner units, which rarely suit an 85-inch TV.
Wall-mounting an 85-inch TV
The 600 × 400 mm VESA pattern is the norm at 85 in, with Sony's 400 × 400 mm an exception. Buy a mount listed for 600 × 400 and rated for at least 125 lb (57 kg), and fix it into studs or solid masonry.
For a seated eye height of 42 in at the center of the screen, the bottom of the picture is about 21 in (54 cm) from the floor and the top about 63 in (160 cm). If the TV goes above a fireplace or a sideboard, the center will be far higher; a tilting mount angled down helps.
Hanging a 96 to 109 lb, 6 ft wide panel at eye height is a job for at least two people, three for the heaviest models. Lift it vertically by the frame, never by the screen, and hook the top of the TV brackets over the wall rail before letting go.
Viewing distance for an 85-inch TV
| Guideline | Feet | Meters |
|---|---|---|
| Closest for 4K (1.5 × screen height) | 5.2 ft | 1.59 m |
| THX 40° viewing angle | 8.5 ft | 2.59 m |
| SMPTE 30° viewing angle | 11.5 ft | 3.51 m |
Seating 8.5 to 11.5 ft away is the sweet spot. Many people are surprised that an 85 suits rooms that are not huge: at 10 ft it gives about a 34° view, between the two guidelines. It becomes too much below about 7 ft, where you have to turn your eyes to follow action at the edges.
85-inch TV vs 75, 83 and 98-inch
| Size | Screen W × H (in) | Screen W × H (cm) | Area vs 85 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75-inch | 65.4 × 36.8 | 166.0 × 93.4 | 22% smaller |
| 83-inch | 72.3 × 40.7 | 183.7 × 103.4 | 5% smaller |
| 85-inch | 74.1 × 41.7 | 188.2 × 105.8 | reference |
| 98-inch | 85.4 × 48.0 | 217.0 × 122.0 | 33% larger |
Going from 75 to 85 adds 8.7 in of width and 4.9 in of height, which you will notice on any wall. Going from 85 to 98 adds another 11.3 in of width and about 40 lb of weight within the same product line (Samsung's DU7200 85 weighs 71.6 lb, its DU9000 98 weighs 114.2 lb), and brings in delivery problems that an 85 avoids. The TV size chart lists every size side by side.
85-inch TV box size: will it fit in your car?
Samsung's spec sheet gives the 85-inch DU7200's carton as 81.7 × 48.5 × 8.3 in (207.5 × 123.2 × 21.1 cm) with a shipping weight of 102.5 lb (46.5 kg). Heavier premium models ship in similar-sized boxes, but their extra 25 to 35 lb of TV makes the package heavier by about the same amount.
- The box needs 82 in (208 cm) of flat floor, and a 49 in opening to stay upright. Few cars, SUVs or minivans have both, and laying the box on its back is something manufacturers advise against. Measure the hatch opening before you go.
- A pickup bed (with the box strapped upright against the cab and protected from rain), a cargo van or store delivery are the safe options.
- Inside the house, check stair turns and narrow hallways for an 82 in long object. The 8.3 in thickness clears any door.
If you plan a soundbar, the widest current bars (46 to 51 in) suit an 85-inch TV's 74 in frame; soundbar dimensions lists current models and heights. With the TV on furniture in a home with children, attach the anti-tip strap to a wall stud.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is an 85-inch TV?
The screen is 74.1 in (188.2 cm) wide, or 6 ft 2 in. Including the frame, current models are 74.4 to 74.9 in (189–190 cm) wide, so a 76 in wide space is the practical minimum.
What is the horizontal length of an 85-inch diagonal TV?
74.1 in (188.2 cm) for a standard 16:9 screen. The horizontal width is 87.2% of the diagonal, and the height is 49.0% of it: 41.7 in (105.8 cm).
Is the 85 inches the diameter of the TV?
The 85 in is the diagonal of the picture, measured from one corner to the opposite corner. TVs are rectangles, so they have no diameter; the diagonal is the figure used for size in every market.
How tall is an 85-inch TV on its stand?
About 43.7 to 45.6 in (111–116 cm), depending on the model and the feet position. Without the stand the TV body is 42.6 to 43.1 in (108–110 cm) tall.
How much does an 85-inch TV weigh?
Lighter models such as Samsung's DU7200 and TCL's QM7K weigh about 72 to 75 lb (32–34 kg) without the stand. Premium sets such as Samsung's QN90D, Sony's Bravia 7 and Hisense's U8N weigh 96 to 109 lb (43–49 kg). The stand adds 2 to 14 lb depending on the model.
What size room do you need for an 85-inch TV?
Seating 8.5 to 11.5 ft (2.6–3.5 m) from the screen suits an 85-inch TV. A room about 13 ft (4 m) or more deep allows that with space for furniture.
