A 98-inch screen has 2.7 times the area of a 60-inch and 33% more than an 85. It is the largest LED TV size sold in volume; above it are 100, 115 and 116-inch models from TCL and Hisense, and LG's 97-inch OLEDs sit just below.

On its stand, Sony's X90L stands 51.4 in (130.5 cm) tall and needs 18.3 in (46.5 cm) of depth. Before choosing furniture for any 98-inch model, look up its depth with stand and foot spacing, since the foot spacing sets the minimum furniture width.

98-inch TV box size and delivery

This is the part that catches people out. A 98-inch TV ships in a carton 7.5 to 8 ft long and over 4.5 ft tall.

1. Vehicle. No car or SUV takes a 93 in, 55 in tall box upright. A cargo van, a box truck, or a pickup with an 8 ft bed (with the box strapped upright and covered) will. Most buyers use the retailer's delivery.
2. Door openings. Standard US interior doors are 80 in tall and 30 to 36 in wide. Carried on its edge, the box is 55 in tall and 11 in thick, so it passes through easily.
3. Corners and stairs. The 93 in length is the problem. Measure hallway turns and stair landings: a 90° turn between a 36 in hallway and a 32 in door is tight for an object this long. Straight stairs are usually fine; winders and tight landings often are not.
4. Elevators. The box has to lie along the cab's longest dimension or its diagonal while staying upright. Measure the cab's interior diagonal and door width before ordering, and ask building management about the freight elevator.
5. People. At 168 to 200 lb boxed, plan on three to four people for stairs. Clear the route before the delivery arrives.

Mounting a 98-inch TV

• VESA: 600 × 400 mm on most models, 600 × 500 mm on TCL's QM7K. Check that the mount lists the exact pattern.
• Rating: at least 175 lb (80 kg) to cover the 148 lb Sony with margin. Some mounts sold for "up to 100 inch" TVs are rated for less, so read the weight, not the size claim.
• Wall: the bracket must span and bolt into at least two studs, or into masonry with the anchors specified. A tilting mount keeps the load close to the wall; full-motion arms at this weight need a reinforced wall.
• Height: with the screen center at a 42 in seated eye height, the bottom of the picture is 18 in (46 cm) off the floor and the top 66 in (168 cm). That is low enough that many people mount it on the wall above a low media unit rather than standing it on one.

Room size and furniture for a 98-inch TV

A seat 10 to 13 ft from the screen suits a 98. The wall needs at least 88 in (224 cm) of clear width, and 96 in (8 ft) or more if you want space to spare at the sides. On a stand, the furniture should be about 87 in (221 cm) wide to be safe with feet at the ends, 19 in (48 cm) deep, rated for 175 lb, and about 14 to 18 in (36–46 cm) high to keep the picture at a sensible height. A 98-inch TV and a 100-inch projector screen are effectively the same picture size. The TV is far brighter and works in daylight; a fixed-frame projector screen of that size weighs a fraction as much and is easier to get into the room.
