83-inch TV dimensions: the screen

An 83-inch screen is 6 ft wide. As with other OLED sizes, the class name rounds up: LG and Samsung quote an 82.5 in viewable diagonal, which makes the picture 71.9 × 40.4 in (182.6 × 102.7 cm).

Current 83-inch TV models: size, depth and weight

The frames add only about half an inch to the width and a little over an inch to the height. The meaningful spread is weight: 21 lb separates the lightest and heaviest 83-inch set, which matters for wall anchors and for the two people carrying it.

With the stand attached

LG's C4 measures 72.9 × 43.0 × 11.0 in (185 × 109 × 28 cm) on its stand and weighs 91.7 lb (41.6 kg); its stand alone is about 20 lb. Sony's A80L feet need 16.9 in (43 cm) of depth. The G4 ships without a table stand at all, only a flush wall bracket.

Mounting an 83-inch TV on the wall

Three of the four models use a 400 × 400 mm hole pattern and Samsung uses 400 × 300 mm. Both sit in the middle of what mounts for 70 to 90-inch TVs accept, so pattern is rarely the problem. Weight and the wall are.

• Rating: choose a bracket rated for at least 110 lb (50 kg). That clears the 92.6 lb Sony with the usual 15 to 20% headroom.
• Fixing: screw into two studs (16 in or 24 in apart in US framing) or into masonry with the anchors the mount maker specifies. Hollow-wall anchors alone are not suitable at this weight.
• Arms: a full-motion arm extended 20 in puts a large lever load on the wall plate. If you only need to angle the TV a little, a tilting mount is lighter on the wall and keeps the panel 2 to 3 in from it.
• Panel width vs stud spacing: the TV is 73 in wide but the bracket only needs to span two studs, so you can center the TV on the wall and slide it a few inches along the rail if a stud is off-center.

Will an 83-inch TV fit your room?

Three measurements decide it: wall width, seating distance and, for a stand, furniture depth.

1. Wall or recess width. You need at least 73 in (186 cm) of clear width. Allow 76 in or more if the TV sits between cabinets or speakers, so the edges aren't boxed in.
2. Seating distance. The THX 40° guideline puts the sofa 8.3 ft (2.52 m) from the screen; SMPTE's 30° minimum puts it at 11.2 ft (3.43 m). Sony's 4K guideline of 1.5 × the screen height sets the closest seat at about 5.1 ft (1.55 m).
3. Furniture. A console 76 to 90 in wide (193–229 cm) and at least 17 in (43 cm) deep holds any of these models on their stands. At 18 to 21 in (46–53 cm) high it keeps the picture low enough for comfortable viewing.
4. Wall height. With the screen center at a 42 in eye height, the bottom of the picture is about 21.7 in (55 cm) from the floor and the top about 62.3 in (158 cm).

83-inch vs 77 and 85-inch TVs

The 83 and 85 are, for planning purposes, the same size. Choose between them on picture technology and weight rather than space: an 83-inch OLED weighs 71 to 93 lb, while 85-inch LED sets range from about 72 lb to over 100 lb. Delivering an 83-inch TV

The LG C4's carton is 80.7 × 47.6 × 11.2 in (205 × 121 × 28 cm) and weighs about 119 to 124 lb (54–56 kg) packed. Other 83-inch OLEDs come in boxes of the same general size, so plan around these figures and check the retailer's listing for yours.

• Vehicles: you need 81 in (206 cm) of flat floor and a 48 in opening to keep the box upright. Few SUVs manage both. A full-size van, a pickup with straps and a cover, or store delivery are the realistic options.
• Hallways and stairs: on its edge the box is 11.2 in thick and nearly 4 ft tall. It passes through standard doors, but measure stair turns and elevator interiors for the 81 in length.
• Unboxing: lift the panel by its frame with two people and keep it vertical. Large OLED panels bend if carried flat or by one corner.
