The 49-inch super ultrawide has a 32:9 screen, which is two 16:9 screens joined at the long edge. Calculated from the 49-inch diagonal:

The height is the surprise for most buyers: at 13.3 in, it is barely taller than a 27-inch monitor (13.2 in) and shorter than a 32-inch (15.7 in). The large number comes entirely from width. Some models list a 48.8-inch viewable diagonal, which trims each figure by about 0.2 in.

Overall size: why the curve matters

Three 49-inch monitors with the same screen size take up very different desk space, because their curves range from almost flat to very tight:

How much the curve pulls the screen in

A 1000R screen wraps around you so the edges are almost as close as the center, but its tips reach nearly 7 in toward you, which is why those models need a deep stand and a deep desk. A 3800R screen is nearly flat: easier to place and better for straight lines in documents and design work, but the far edges are a quarter of the way farther away and seen at an angle.

Desk size for a 49-inch monitor

• Width: the monitor is 45 to 48 in wide, so a 55 in (140 cm) desk is a practical minimum and 63 in (160 cm) leaves room for speakers or a lamp. A 48 in desk is filled edge to edge.
• Depth: 30 in (76 cm) for 1800R and 3800R models; 31.5 in (80 cm) or more for 1000R models, whose stand alone takes about 16.5 in.
• Viewing distance: 28 to 36 in (70 to 90 cm). Closer than that and even a tightly curved screen needs head turns to reach the corners.
• Desk strength and stability: 13 to 16 kg with stand sits at the back edge of the desk. On a sit-stand frame, check the lifting capacity and keep the monitor centered over the frame's legs to limit wobble at standing height.

Using a 32:9 screen: work, video and games

• 16:9 video plays at 2560 × 1440 in the middle half of the screen, 23.6 in wide, with black bars 1280 pixels wide on each side. The picture is the size of a 27-inch monitor.
• 21:9 games and films can fill 3440 × 1440 in the center, a 34-inch ultrawide's worth of picture.
• Games that support 32:9 fill the whole width. At 5120 × 1440 that is 7.4 million pixels, 89% of the load of 4K UHD.
• Picture-by-picture: many models can show two computers at once, each at 2560 × 1440, which suits a work laptop and a personal PC on one screen.

Some 49-inch monitors, mainly older or lower-cost models, are 3840 × 1080 instead. They have the same outline but only 81 PPI, equal to two 27-inch 1080p screens, so text is noticeably coarser.

49-inch vs 34-inch and 38-inch ultrawides

The 49-inch is 15.8 in wider than a 34-inch ultrawide at practically the same height, and 12.6 in wider but 1.1 in shorter than a 38-inch ultrawide. All three have about 110 PPI, so text looks the same size. If what you want is more height rather than more width, a 38-inch or a 57-inch 32:9 model (7680 × 2160, 54.9 × 15.4 in screen, about 52 in wide overall) is the alternative. Mounting and moving a 49-inch monitor

• VESA pattern: 100 × 100 mm on most models; the Dell U4924DW also accepts 200 × 100 mm.
• Arm rating: panel weights are 20 to 27 lb (9 to 12 kg), at or beyond the top of standard arms. Use a heavy-duty arm rated for ultrawides, such as the Ergotron HX (20 to 42 lb), and check whether it needs a heavy-duty tilt pivot for your model.
• Curve depth on an arm: a 1000R panel's center sits about 7 in behind its edges. Arms rate capacity at a set display depth, so a deeply curved screen can reduce the usable weight rating.
• Carrying: boxed, the Dell U4924DW weighs 27.7 kg (61 lb). The box is over 4 ft long, so plan for two people and check that it fits through the car door or trunk.
