These are the dimensions of the picture on a 16:9 screen with a full 50-inch diagonal. Most brands actually fit a 49.5-inch panel and sell it as "50-inch class", which shrinks the picture to 43.1 × 24.3 in (109.6 × 61.6 cm). The difference is too small to notice from a seat, but it is why spec sheets rarely show exactly 50.
In everyday terms, a 50-inch screen is about 3 ft 7½ in wide and just over 2 ft tall. At 4K (3840 × 2160) it has about 88 pixels per inch.

Many 50-inch TVs stand on two feet near the ends. The Samsung DU7200's feet are 29.6 in apart and the TCL S5's about 33.6 in. A shelf or dresser narrower than that gap cannot hold the TV, even if the screen would overhang safely. Look for a model with a center stand or an inner foot position if your surface is under 32 in wide.

The 55-inch is only 4.3 in wider and 2.5 in taller, yet it gives 21% more picture. If you have 49 in of width and sit 6 ft or more away, compare the 55-inch dimensions before deciding. If the TV is for a desk or a small kitchen, the 43-inch TV is about 6 in narrower.
Using a 50-inch TV as a computer monitor
It works for games and video, less well for text. The 4K comfort distance is about 37 in (0.93 m), but standard desks are 24 to 30 in deep, so your eyes end up closer than that and you have to turn your head to read the corners. Mounting a 50-inch TV
- Height: with the screen center at about 42 in (107 cm), the bottom of a 25.5 in tall set sits about 29 in (74 cm) from the floor. In a bedroom where you watch from bed, mount it higher so the center is at the eye height of a person lying propped up, and consider a tilting mount.
- Mount: VESA 200 × 200, 300 × 200 or 300 × 300 mm. A mount rated for 40 lb or more is plenty; the main concern is fixing into studs or solid masonry.

Box size: will a 50-inch TV fit in your car?
The boxed Samsung DU7200 measures about 49 × 30 × 6 in (124 × 76 × 15 cm) and weighs about 31 lb (14.2 kg). That is small enough to stand upright in most hatchbacks, SUVs and minivans with the seats folded, and in the back seat of some larger sedans if the rear door opening is at least 30 in tall and the seat is 49 in wide between the doors.
