43-Inch TV Dimensions in Inches, cm and mm

The 43-inch is the smallest size where most models are 4K, which makes it the usual pick for bedrooms, kitchens, offices and small apartments. Below: the exact screen and set dimensions, and what fits where.

Quick answer

A 43-inch TV screen is 37.5 in wide and 21.1 in tall (95.2 × 53.5 cm). Current models measure about 37.6 to 38.1 in wide and 22.0 to 22.2 in tall (955 to 967 × 559 to 564 mm) without the stand, 2.2 to 2.8 in deep, and weigh 14.6 to 19.4 lb (6.6 to 8.8 kg).

On its feet, the TCL S5 stands 23.6 in (599 mm) tall and 7.3 in (185 mm) deep, and its feet are 28.2 in (716 mm) apart. Plan around 38.5 × 22.5 in (98 × 57 cm) for the panel and about 24 in of height on its feet, and any of these 43-inch sets will fit.

Where a 43-inch TV fits

On a dresser or narrow stand

The TV is about 38 in wide, but the feet decide the minimum surface. With end feet 28.2 in apart, as on the TCL S5, the furniture must be at least about 30 in wide. Most dressers (see dresser sizes) and standard TV stands are wider than that. Check depth too: 7 to 9 in of footprint means a nightstand-depth shelf is enough, but leave room for the feet to sit fully on the surface.

In a kitchen

In a standard US kitchen, wall cabinets start about 18 in above a 36 in counter. A 43-inch set is about 22 in tall, so it does not fit under the cabinets; it needs a wall section of its own or a ceiling or cabinet-underside mount. A 32-inch TV (about 17 in tall without stand) is the size that fits beneath standard cabinets.

On a desk as a monitor

A 4K 43-inch screen has about 102.5 pixels per inch, close to the 108.8 of a 27-inch 1440p monitor, so text looks reasonably sharp. The catch is distance: Sony's 4K guideline puts the comfortable minimum at about 32 in (0.8 m), and the screen is 37.5 in wide, so you need a desk at least 30 in deep or a wall mount behind it. A TV also lacks the height and tilt adjustment of a monitor stand; the monitor size guide compares the options.

On the wall

With the screen center at about 42 in (107 cm) for seated viewing, the bottom edge of a 22 in tall set is about 31 in (79 cm) from the floor. For viewing from bed, raise the center toward the eye height of someone propped up on pillows and add a slight downward tilt. At under 20 lb, a 43-inch set is light enough for full-motion arms that pull out and swivel.

Measuring your space for a 43-inch TV

  1. Width: measure the clear width of the wall, recess or shelf. You need at least 38.5 in (98 cm); 40 in (102 cm) leaves room for cables and air on both sides.
  2. Height: for a shelf under a cabinet or in a bookcase, measure from the shelf to the obstruction above. Allow about 24 in (61 cm) for a set on its feet, plus an inch for ventilation at the top.
  3. Depth: the feet need 7 to 9 in of shelf. On a wall mount, plan for about 3 to 4.5 in from the wall to the front of the screen with a flat bracket.
  4. Feet span: if the surface is narrower than about 30 in, choose a model with a center stand, or wall-mount it.
  5. Sockets and inputs: the power and HDMI ports are on the back, often toward one side. Leave 4 in (10 cm) behind or beside the set for a straight HDMI plug, or use right-angle connectors.

How far to sit from a 43-inch TV

A 43-inch TV is ideal from about 4 to 6 ft. Past 7 ft it starts to look small, and a 50-inch TV, only about 6 in wider, becomes the better fit.

The 43 and 40-inch sizes look similar on paper, but 43 inches has 15% more picture and far more 4K models. Choose 40 only if the space is under about 39 in wide. The full range is in the TV size chart.

Box size and carrying

Retail boxes are about 41.5 to 42.6 in long, 26 in tall and 5.6 to 5.8 in thick (105 to 108 × 66 × 14 to 15 cm). The boxed Samsung DU7200 weighs about 24 lb (10.9 kg) and the LG UT80 about 23.4 lb (10.6 kg). One adult can carry it, and it usually fits upright on the back seat of a car if the door opening is more than 26 in tall, or in any hatchback or SUV.

Frequently asked questions

What is the height of a 43-inch TV?

The screen is 21.1 in (53.5 cm) tall. The TV itself is about 22 in (56 cm) tall without its stand. On its feet it is roughly 1.5 in taller: the TCL S5 measures 23.6 in (60 cm).

How wide is a 43-inch TV in cm?

The screen is 95.2 cm wide. With the frame, current models are 95.5 to 96.8 cm wide, so allow about 97 cm, plus a few centimeters of clearance on each side if it goes into a recess.

Is a 43-inch TV actually 43 inches?

The measured diagonal is usually 42.5 in; the set is sold as "43-inch class". That makes the picture about 37.0 × 20.8 in (94.1 × 52.9 cm), half an inch narrower than a full 43-inch screen.

What VESA mount fits a 43-inch TV?

Most use 200 × 200 mm (Samsung DU7200, LG UT80). TCL's S5 uses a 100 × 200 mm pattern. Check your manual, and choose a mount rated for at least 20 lb; at under 20 lb, a 43-inch set suits articulating arms.

How far should you sit from a 43-inch TV?

About 4.3 to 5.8 ft (1.3 to 1.8 m) for TV viewing, based on the THX 40° and SMPTE 30° guidelines. With 4K content you can sit as close as about 2.6 ft (0.8 m), which is why 43-inch TVs also work as large desk monitors.
