Most 70-inch TVs on sale are labeled "70-inch class," and the spec sheet lists a 69.5 in viewable diagonal. That shaves about 0.4 in off the picture width. It makes no practical difference to how big the TV looks, but it explains why your tape measure reads a little short.
Overall size of current 70-inch TVs
The frame adds very little on modern sets. Across the models below, overall width is only 0.1 to 1.1 in more than a true 70-inch screen, and height varies more because of the bottom bezel and logo strip.

With the feet attached, height rises to about 37 to 38 in (94–97 cm) and the footprint depth to 12.8 to 13.1 in (33 cm). The Vizio V705M-K03, for example, measures 61.1 × 38.2 × 13.1 in on its stand.
The 70-inch size is almost entirely a budget and mid-range LED size. No brand currently makes a 70-inch OLED (OLED panels jump from 65 to 77 in), and premium lines such as Samsung's QN90 or Sony's Bravia 7 skip 70 in favor of 75. If you want OLED or a top-tier mini-LED, the size you are really choosing between is 65 or 75.
How much space a 70-inch TV needs
On a TV stand
- Minimum furniture width: about 62 in (158 cm), the width of the widest current model. The feet on most 70-inch sets sit near the outer edges, so a narrower top leaves a foot hanging in the air.
- Comfortable width: 66 to 72 in (168–183 cm) gives 2 to 5 in of furniture on each side, which looks balanced and leaves room for a remote or speaker.
- Depth: at least 14 in (36 cm) to hold a 13 in deep stand footprint with a margin at the front edge.

On the wall
For a seated eye height of about 42 in (107 cm), mount the TV so the screen center is at 42 in. With a 34.3 in screen, the bottom edge of the picture then sits about 25 in (63 cm) above the floor and the top edge about 59 in (151 cm). Raise all three figures by the same amount if your seating is higher or you watch from a bar stool.
The VESA patterns above (400 × 400, 400 × 300 and 400 × 200 mm) are all covered by a standard "large TV" mount, but check the bracket's weight rating. A rating of at least 60 lb (27 kg) leaves margin over a 52 lb set.
A flat wall mount adds 1 to 2 in behind the TV, so a 2.9 in deep set ends up about 4 to 5 in from the wall. A tilting or full-motion arm adds more. Check this if the TV sits in an alcove or next to a door frame.
Viewing distance for a 70-inch TV
Two widely used guidelines set the range. THX recommends a 40° viewing angle for a cinema-like picture, and SMPTE guidance sets 30° as the minimum for a satisfying image. For a 70-inch screen that means:

70 vs 65 vs 75 inch
Each 5-inch step looks small on paper, but screen area grows with the square of the diagonal. A 70 has 16% more picture than a 65, and a 75 has 15% more than a 70.

Getting a 70-inch TV home

- Check the cargo floor length. You need about 70 in (178 cm) of flat floor for the box on its long edge. Most minivans and three-row SUVs have this with the seats folded; most sedans and small crossovers do not.
- Check the opening height. The box is 41 in tall standing up. Hatch openings on smaller SUVs are often lower than that, so the box would have to lie flat.
- Keep it upright. TV makers print "this side up" on the box for a reason: lying a large panel flat lets it flex, which can crack the glass. If it must lie down, keep the screen side up and pad the floor.
- Plan for two people. At 65 to 70 lb and nearly 6 ft long, the box is awkward rather than heavy. Carry it on its edge, one person at each end.
