7-Inch Tablet Dimensions: Screen, Body and Weight
For anyone sizing up a 7-inch tablet for a child, for reading or for a car or kitchen mount, or buying a case for one. Figures are for the screen and for real current models.
A 7-inch tablet has a screen about 6.0 × 3.5 inches (15.3 × 9.0 cm), based on the 1024 × 600 panel almost all of them use. The whole device is typically 6.9-7.1 × 4.0-4.7 in (176-181 × 102-118 mm) and weighs about 240-280 g.

7-inch tablet screen size in inches and cm
Seven inches is the diagonal of the lit screen. Nearly every 7-inch tablet sold in the last decade, from the Fire 7 to the Lenovo Tab M7, uses a 1024 × 600 panel, which is a long, narrow 1.71:1 shape (a little wider than 16:9). That gives the following screen:
A few 7-inch screens use other shapes, and the shape changes the width and height noticeably:
| Shape | Width × height (in) | Width × height (cm) | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1024 × 600 (~1.71:1) | 6.04 × 3.54 | 15.3 × 9.0 | Fire 7, Lenovo Tab M7, most budget 7-inch tablets |
| 16:10 (1280 × 800, 1920 × 1200) | 5.94 × 3.71 | 15.1 × 9.4 | Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (2016), Nexus 7 (2013) |
| ~4:3 (1680 × 1264) | 5.59 × 4.21 | 14.2 × 10.7 | Kindle Paperwhite (2024), an e-reader |
The squarer e-reader screen has 10% more area than the 1024 × 600 tablet screen on the same 7-inch diagonal, which is why a page of text looks less cramped on it.
Dimensions of current 7-inch tablets
Few new tablets launch at this size now. Amazon's Fire 7 is the main one still on sale; Lenovo's Tab M7 (3rd Gen) is the other common model. The Paperwhite is included because it is the device most people compare a 7-inch tablet with.
| Model | Inches | Millimeters | Weight | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Fire 7 (2022) | 7.13 × 4.65 × 0.38 | 181 × 118 × 9.7 | 282 g (9.9 oz) | 1024 × 600 |
| Lenovo Tab M7 (3rd Gen, 2021) | 6.94 × 4.03 × 0.33 | 176.2 × 102.3 × 8.3 | 237 g (8.4 oz) | 1024 × 600 |
| Kindle Paperwhite (2024, e-reader) | 6.96 × 5.02 × 0.31 | 176.7 × 127.6 × 7.8 | 211 g (7.4 oz) | 1680 × 1264 |
The Fire 7 has thick borders: about 14 mm on every side of the screen. The Lenovo trims the side bezels, which is why it is 16 mm narrower with the same panel. Both are much thicker than a current iPad (6-7 mm), which matters if you plan to use a slim magnetic mount.
How a 7-inch tablet compares with a phone
Large phones have crept up to 6.9 inches, so the diagonal alone suggests almost no difference. The width tells a different story, because phones are about 2.17 times taller than they are wide while a 7-inch tablet is 1.71 times.
| Device | Screen width | Screen height | Screen area |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-inch tablet (1024 × 600) | 3.54 in (9.0 cm) | 6.04 in (15.3 cm) | 138 cm² |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max (6.9 in) | 2.87 in (7.3 cm) | 6.23 in (15.8 cm) | 115 cm² |
| iPhone 17 (6.3 in) | 2.62 in (6.7 cm) | 5.70 in (14.5 cm) | 96 cm² |
The tablet screen is 1.7 cm wider and has about 20% more area than the biggest iPhone, and 44% more than a standard 6.3-inch phone. Text set to the same physical size fits more words per line. Book-style folding phones, whose inner screens are 7.6 to 8 inches and nearly square, give more area again. The phone screen size guide has the full phone figures.
7-inch vs 8-inch and 10-inch tablets
| Size | Screen (cm) | Screen area | Typical body (mm) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 in (Fire 7) | 15.3 × 9.0 | 138 cm² | 181 × 118 | 282 g |
| 8 in (Fire HD 8) | 17.2 × 10.8 | 186 cm² | 202 × 137 | 337 g |
| 10.1 in (Fire HD 10) | 21.8 × 13.6 | 296 cm² | 247 × 166 | 434 g |
A 10.1-inch screen has a little over twice the area of a 7-inch one (296 against 138 cm²) for about 150 g more weight. The 8-inch is a 35% step up in area. For video and split-screen apps, that jump matters more than the diagonal numbers suggest. See the 8-inch tablet and 10.1-inch tablet pages for those sizes in detail, or the tablet sizes chart for every size.
What a 7-inch tablet is good for, and where it falls short
Good for
- Children: light enough (237-282 g) for small hands, and the cheapest size to replace
- Reading on the go: the body is only slightly larger than a mass-market paperback (about 108 × 175 mm)
- Fixed jobs: recipe screen, smart-home control panel, car or bike mount, music stand for lyrics
Watch out for
- Low pixel density: 1024 × 600 is about 170 ppi, so small text looks soft next to a phone at 460 ppi
- Narrow portrait width: 9 cm is tight for on-screen keyboards and PDFs
- Thickness of 8-10 mm and wide bezels make it bulkier in a pocket than its screen suggests
Buying a case or mount for a 7-inch tablet
- Identify the exact model and year. On a Fire tablet, open Settings > Device Options; on a Lenovo, Settings > About tablet. Fire 7 generations look alike but cameras and buttons have moved between them.
- Measure the body, not the screen. A universal sleeve or mount should list an inside range that includes your tablet's height, width and thickness: about 176-181 × 102-118 × 8.3-9.7 mm for current models.
- Allow for the case. A folio adds a few millimeters to each dimension; a foam kids' bumper adds much more. Check a mount's clamp range against the tablet in its case.
Universal cases labeled 7 inch are sized for the body of a typical 7-inch tablet, roughly 18 × 11-12 cm. A narrow tablet like the Tab M7 (10.2 cm wide) will slide around in one; a strap-style or spring-clamp design holds it better.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a 7-inch tablet in cm?
The screen diagonal is 17.8 cm, and the visible screen is about 15.3 × 9.0 cm. The Amazon Fire 7 (2022) measures 18.1 × 11.8 × 0.97 cm overall.
Is a 7-inch tablet bigger than a phone?
Only slightly on the diagonal, but clearly in width and area. A 6.9-inch phone screen is 7.3 cm wide and about 115 cm² in area; a 7-inch tablet screen is 9.0 cm wide (held upright) and about 138 cm², roughly 20% more.
Is a Kindle a 7-inch tablet?
The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite has a 7-inch screen, but it is an E Ink e-reader, not a tablet. Its screen is close to 4:3 (about 14.2 × 10.7 cm), so it is wider than a 7-inch tablet screen in portrait, and the device weighs 211 g.
Will a 7-inch tablet fit in a pocket?
Usually only in a coat or cargo pocket. At about 18 × 12 cm it is larger than the largest phones (about 16.3 × 7.8 cm), and a kids' bumper case adds more.
What resolution is a 7-inch tablet?
Most are 1024 × 600 pixels, which works out to about 170 pixels per inch. Older premium 7-inch tablets such as the 2013 Nexus 7 used 1920 × 1200.
