8-inch tablet screen dimensions
Most 8-inch tablets, including every Fire HD 8 and the Lenovo Tab M8, use a 16:10 screen. Apple's iPad mini is the main exception: the classic models were 7.9-inch 4:3, and since 2021 it has an 8.3-inch screen with a 1.52:1 shape. Here is how those compare.

The older 7.9-inch iPad mini has slightly more screen area than an 8-inch Android tablet despite the smaller diagonal, because 4:3 is squarer. The current 8.3-inch mini has 10% more area than a 16:10 8-inch screen.

Resolution is where 8-inch tablets differ most. The budget standard is 1280 × 800; Apple's minis pack in almost three times as many pixels.

For web and app layouts, the iPad mini 8.3-inch reports 1133 × 744 points (half its pixel count in each direction), and the 7.9-inch models 1024 × 768. If you are making an image to fill an 8-inch 1280 × 800 screen exactly, make it 1280 × 800 pixels; anything larger is scaled down.

The Fire HD 8 has a border of about 15 mm around the screen on all four sides, which is why it is the largest of the group despite having the smallest screen. The 8.3-inch iPad mini fits a bigger display into a body 6.5 mm shorter and 2.6 mm narrower than the Fire, and it is 3.3 mm thinner.
The 6th-gen and A17 Pro iPad mini have identical dimensions (195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3 mm), so most cases are sold for both. Cases for the iPad mini 4 and 5 will not fit: those models are 7.8 mm taller and have a Home button.
8-inch vs 10-inch tablets
This is the size decision most buyers face. The 10.1-inch screen has 60% more area (296 against 186 cm²), and the tablet weighs about 100 g more.

- Choose 8 inches for holding in one hand for long periods, for young children, and for travel where every 100 g counts. The body fits a small handbag or the seat-back pocket of a plane.
- Choose 10 inches for video watched from a stand, for two apps side by side, and for reading PDFs or magazines, where the extra width avoids constant zooming.
- Consider 8.7 inches as a middle ground: Samsung's 8.7-inch Galaxy Tab models are 21 cm tall but only 12.5 cm wide.
How to tell whether your tablet is 8 inches
Seven-, eight- and 8.7-inch tablets look alike across a room. A ruler settles it in under a minute.
- Measure the screen corner to corner. Only the lit area counts. An 8-inch screen measures 20.3 cm diagonally; a 7-inch measures 17.8 cm; an 8.7-inch measures 22.1 cm.
- Measure the screen's short side. About 10.8 cm points to an 8-inch 16:10 screen. About 9.0 cm is a 7-inch tablet, about 11.3 cm an 8.7-inch Samsung, and 11.6 cm (with the long side 17.7 cm) the current iPad mini.
- Confirm in settings. Fire tablets list the model under Settings > Device Options; the Fire HD 8 generations are named by year (2020, 2022, 2024). On an iPad, Settings > General > About shows the model name.
Amazon sold a Fire HD 8 Plus alongside the 2020 and 2022 Fire HD 8, with the same 8-inch, 1280 × 800 screen. The Plus differs inside (more memory, wireless charging), so check the listing carefully before buying a case or dock that depends on charging or port position.
How an 8-inch tablet compares with paper and books
An 8-inch tablet body (about 20 × 12-14 cm) is close to a trade paperback and a little smaller than an A5 notebook (14.8 × 21 cm). The screen itself is smaller: 17.2 × 10.8 cm, roughly 60% of the area of an A5 page. That makes 8 inches comfortable for novels and single-column text, but full pages designed for print have to be shrunk.
