9.7-Inch Tablet Dimensions: Screen and Every 9.7-Inch iPad
9.7 inches was the original iPad size, used from 2010 to 2018, so most 9.7-inch tablets in use today are iPads. This page gives the screen size and the body size of each generation, which is what you need for cases, mounts and replacements.
A 9.7-inch tablet has a 4:3 screen measuring 7.76 × 5.82 inches (19.7 × 14.8 cm). From 2013 to 2018, every 9.7-inch iPad has the same footprint: 240 × 169.5 mm (9.45 × 6.67 in), either 7.5 mm or 6.1 mm thick, weighing 437-469 g.

9.7-inch tablet screen dimensions
Almost every 9.7-inch tablet uses a 4:3 screen, the same shape as a traditional TV or a photo print. The figures below come from the iPad's 2048 × 1536 panel at 264 pixels per inch, which works out to an exact 9.70-inch diagonal.
| Measurement | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| Width (landscape) | 7.76 in | 19.7 cm |
| Height (landscape) | 5.82 in | 14.8 cm |
| Diagonal | 9.7 in | 24.6 cm |
| Area | 45.1 sq in | 291 cm² |
The 4:3 shape makes a 9.7-inch screen roomier than its diagonal suggests. A 10.1-inch 16:10 Android screen is longer (21.8 cm) but only 13.6 cm tall, and it has about the same area: 296 cm² against 291 cm².
In portrait, the screen is 14.8 cm wide and 19.7 cm tall. An A4 page shown full-screen appears at about 66% of its printed width and height; a US Letter page at about 69%.
Every 9.7-inch iPad: dimensions and weight
Apple kept one footprint from the iPad Air (2013) to the iPad 6th gen (2018), changing only the thickness. The first three generations were larger and heavier.
| Model (Wi-Fi model no.) | Year | Millimeters | Inches | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPad (1st gen) | 2010 | 242.8 × 189.7 × 13.4 | 9.56 × 7.47 × 0.53 | 680 g |
| iPad 2 | 2011 | 241.2 × 185.7 × 8.8 | 9.50 × 7.31 × 0.35 | 601 g |
| iPad 3rd and 4th gen | 2012 | 241.2 × 185.7 × 9.4 | 9.50 × 7.31 × 0.37 | 652 g |
| iPad Air (A1474) | 2013 | 240 × 169.5 × 7.5 | 9.45 × 6.67 × 0.30 | 469 g |
| iPad Air 2 (A1566) | 2014 | 240 × 169.5 × 6.1 | 9.45 × 6.67 × 0.24 | 437 g |
| iPad Pro 9.7-inch (A1673) | 2016 | 240 × 169.5 × 6.1 | 9.45 × 6.67 × 0.24 | 437 g |
| iPad 5th gen (A1822) | 2017 | 240 × 169.5 × 7.5 | 9.45 × 6.67 × 0.30 | 469 g |
| iPad 6th gen (A1893) | 2018 | 240 × 169.5 × 7.5 | 9.45 × 6.67 × 0.30 | 469 g |
The model number is printed in small text on the back of every iPad. If yours starts with A1822 or A1893, it is a 5th- or 6th-gen iPad; the cellular versions have different numbers but the same dimensions and weigh a few grams more.
Which 9.7-inch iPad cases are interchangeable
Identical height and width do not guarantee a case fits, because thickness and cutouts vary. Use this as a guide, and check the case listing for your exact model:
- iPad 5th gen, iPad 6th gen and iPad Air (1st gen) are all 7.5 mm thick, and many cases are sold for all three. The original Air has a side switch above the volume buttons that the 5th and 6th gen lack, so a case made only for those may cover it.
- iPad Air 2 and 9.7-inch iPad Pro are 6.1 mm thick. A case for the 7.5 mm models will be loose on them. The Pro has four speaker grilles and a rear flash that Air 2 cases may block.
- iPad 2, 3 and 4 share a body (the 3rd and 4th gen are 0.6 mm thicker than the iPad 2). None of their cases fit the later 9.7-inch models, which are 16.2 mm narrower.
Apple's Smart Keyboard works only with the 9.7-inch iPad Pro among 9.7-inch models, because it needs the Smart Connector. Bluetooth keyboard cases sold for the "iPad 9.7" usually mean the 5th and 6th gen.
Other 9.7-inch tablets
Samsung used the 9.7-inch 4:3 size for its Galaxy Tab S2 and Tab S3, aiming directly at the iPad.
| Galaxy Tab S3 (2017) | iPad 6th gen (2018) | |
|---|---|---|
| Body | 237.3 × 169 × 6.0 mm | 240 × 169.5 × 7.5 mm |
| Weight | 429 g | 469 g |
| Screen | 9.7 in, 2048 × 1536 | 9.7 in, 2048 × 1536 |
The screens are the same size and resolution, and the bodies differ by under 3 mm in height. Even so, cases are not interchangeable: the button, port and camera positions are different.
9.7-inch vs 10.2-inch and 10.9-inch iPads
Anyone replacing an old 9.7-inch iPad is choosing between these sizes, and the extra screen is modest.
| Model | Screen (cm) | Screen area | Body (mm) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPad 9.7 (6th gen) | 19.7 × 14.8 | 291 cm² | 240 × 169.5 × 7.5 | 469 g |
| iPad 10.2 (7th-9th gen) | 20.8 × 15.6 | 324 cm² | 250.6 × 174.1 × 7.5 | 483-490 g |
| iPad 10.9 (10th gen) and iPad A16 | 22.7 × 15.8 | 358 cm² | 248.6 × 179.5 × 7.0 | 477 g |
The 10.2-inch screen is 11% larger and keeps the 4:3 shape and Home button. The 10.9-inch screen is 23% larger, mostly in width, and drops the Home button. Both bodies are about 1 cm taller and 0.5-1 cm wider, so a stand or wall mount made for a 9.7-inch iPad will usually need replacing. See the 10.9-inch tablet dimensions and the tablet sizes chart for all current sizes. For the Android 10-inch class, see the 10.1-inch tablet page.
