10.9-Inch Tablet Dimensions: Two Different Screens, One Number
Apple and Samsung both sell 10.9-inch tablets, but the screens are different shapes. This page gives the exact screen and body size of each, explains Apple's switch to calling the same screen "11-inch", and shows which cases fit which model.
A 10.9-inch iPad screen (iPad Air 4th/5th gen, iPad 10th gen) measures 8.94 × 6.21 in (22.7 × 15.8 cm). A 10.9-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE or S10 FE screen is 16:10 and measures 9.24 × 5.78 in (23.5 × 14.7 cm). The iPad Air body is 247.6 × 178.5 × 6.1 mm; the Galaxy Tab S10 FE is 254.3 × 165.8 × 6.0 mm.

10.9-inch screen size: iPad vs Samsung
A diagonal does not fix the shape. Apple's 10.9-inch panel is 2360 × 1640 pixels, a ratio of about 1.44:1. Samsung's 10.9-inch panels are 2304 × 1440, an exact 16:10 (1.6:1). The result is two quite different rectangles with the same 27.7 cm diagonal.
| Screen | Inches | Centimeters | Area | Resolution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPad 10.9 in (1.44:1) | 8.94 × 6.21 | 22.7 × 15.8 | 358 cm² | 2360 × 1640, 264 ppi |
| Galaxy Tab 10.9 in (16:10) | 9.24 × 5.78 | 23.5 × 14.7 | 345 cm² | 2304 × 1440, 249 ppi |
The iPad shape is better for portrait reading, PDFs and handwriting with a stylus. The Galaxy shape fits 16:9 video with smaller black bars: a widescreen film fills 90% of the Galaxy's screen height but 81% of the iPad's.
Why Apple now calls the 10.9-inch iPad "11-inch"
From 2024, Apple stopped selling tablets described as 10.9-inch. The iPad Air became the "11-inch iPad Air", and the 2025 base iPad (A16) is also listed as 11-inch. The screen did not change. Apple's footnotes state that, measured as a rectangle, the display is 10.86 inches diagonally, and the resolution is still 2360 × 1640.
- Same screen, same body: iPad Air 4th gen (2020), 5th gen (2022) and the 11-inch iPad Air M2 (2024), M3 (2025) and M4 all measure 247.6 × 178.5 × 6.1 mm.
- Same screen, different body: the iPad 10th gen (2022) and iPad A16 (2025) use the same 2360 × 1640 panel in a slightly larger 248.6 × 179.5 × 7.0 mm body.
- Different screen: the 11-inch iPad Pro is a genuine 11 inches (2388 × 1668 up to 2022) or 11.1 inches (2420 × 1668 from 2024). See the 11-inch tablet page.

The iPads are about 7 mm shorter and 13 mm wider than the Galaxy models, a direct result of the screen shapes. In centimeters, a 10.9-inch iPad is roughly 24.8 × 17.9 cm and a 10.9-inch Galaxy 25.4 × 16.6 cm.
Which 10.9-inch cases and keyboards fit which tablet
A case labeled "10.9-inch" is made for one body. Differences of 1 mm in length and 0.9 mm in thickness are enough to stop a hard shell from closing or to leave a folio loose.
| Case made for | Generally fits | Does not fit |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Air 4th/5th gen | iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, M4) in most cases; check the camera cutout and the front-camera position (moved to the long edge on the M2 and later) | iPad 10th gen, iPad A16 |
| iPad 10th gen | iPad A16 | Any iPad Air |
| Galaxy Tab S9 FE | Not a reliable fit for the S10 FE, which is 0.5 mm thinner and lighter; buy the model-specific case | Any iPad |
The same rule applies to keyboard cases that connect magnetically: they rely on exact connector and magnet positions. Check the manufacturer's compatibility list for your generation before buying a used one.

| 10.1-inch Android (16:10) | 21.8 × 13.6 | 296 cm² | 17% smaller |
| 10.2-inch iPad (4:3) | 20.8 × 15.6 | 324 cm² | 10% smaller |
| 10.9-inch iPad | 22.7 × 15.8 | 358 cm² | - |
| 11-inch iPad Pro (2018-2022) | 23.0 × 16.0 | 369 cm² | 3% larger |
| 12.9-inch iPad (4:3) | 26.3 × 19.7 | 518 cm² | 45% larger |
Moving from a 9.7- or 10.2-inch iPad to a 10.9-inch one gains mostly width in landscape, about 2-3 cm, while the height in landscape grows by only 2-10 mm. Moving up to the 11-inch Pro gains almost nothing in screen size; the jump that changes how a tablet feels is to 12.9 or 13 inches. See the 9.7-inch, 10.1-inch and 12.9-inch pages, or the tablet sizes chart for the full range.
